About Rhinoplasty

A rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that changes the appearance of the nose. At Forma Plastic Surgery, our experienced team of surgeons has extensive experience performing cosmetic nose procedures. While rhinoplasty consists of delicate changes, results look quite dramatic. Rhinoplasty can reshape a misshapen structure, reduce protrusion, decrease the size, or treat a bump on top. The goal is to create an aesthetically pleasing nose that meets your goals and functions properly. Please schedule a consultation at Forma Plastic Surgery to learn more about rhinoplasty.

Candidates For Rhinoplasty

Adults and teenagers over 16 years of age can be great candidates for cosmetic nose surgery, better known as rhinoplasty. If you find yourself frustrated with the appearance of your nose and have distinct issues you would like to correct or enhance, this treatment may be the ideal answer to help you achieve the look you want. It is important that realistic expectations are understood, as your appearance will be altered. Furthermore, facial maturity should also be complete to avoid dramatic changes in outcomes. This factor will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Yao, especially for individuals under 21.

What to Expect with Rhinoplasty

Adults and teenagers over 16 years of age are candidates for rhinoplasty, and facial growth should also be complete. If you feel frustrated with your nose's appearance or have areas you would like to treat and enhance, this procedure could work well for you. Before the surgery, we will set realistic expectations, and it is essential to realize that your facial appearance will look different. During your consultation, we discuss all of your concerns, develop a surgical strategy that aligns with your goals, and provide information about the cost of rhinoplasty. We take a conservative approach and ensure your nose retains your heritage so it looks natural and beautiful after surgery.

On the day of your surgery, rhinoplasty begins with general anesthesia, and we consider it an outpatient surgery. We use different approaches during nose surgery, including an open or closed (endonasal). The objective is to remove excess bone, cartilage, and tissue or improve the overall structure during your procedure. For some patients, we may add cartilage for reconstruction. Once you are comfortable, our board-certified plastic surgeons reposition the nasal features and drape the skin over the newly created framework. Next, patients receive stitches on the inside portion of the nose or along the natural external crease.

After your nose surgery, our nurses will monitor you closely in the recovery area and then release you to recover at home. The area around the nose will appear swollen and bruised for the first few days. Most patients typically experience bruising underneath the eyes. Using cold compresses and prescription medication can reduce discomfort. Your post-op appointment will occur within the first several days after surgery. It generally takes about 2 – 4 weeks to recover from rhinoplasty. During this timeframe, you should avoid strenuous activity.

Rhinoplasty FAQ

What about ethnic rhinoplasty?
Ethnic rhinoplasty focuses on improving the appearance of the nose while still keeping your cultural identity. This is often a concern if you are Asian, African American, or Middle Eastern. During your consultation, you can talk about what you like about your nose and what you would like to change. This will allow us to customize your treatment plan so you get your best results.

Can I combine nose surgery with other facial surgeries?
Some patients consider combining nose surgery with another cosmetic procedure, like chin or cheek augmentation. Having multiple surgeries for a dramatic result can be discussed during your consultation. Once we  understand your concerns and goals, we can help you choose what procedures will be in your treatment plan. Nose reshaping surgery can often help make your whole face look more balanced so you should wait to see your results before getting another procedure.

How much does rhinoplasty cost?

The cost of nose reshaping surgery varies based on the technique used and the complexity of the procedure. Before estimating costs, we will listen to your needs and goals to help create your custom treatment plan. Once this is complete, we can discuss costs for the facility, anesthesia, and more. To get your best results, it's better to focus on choosing an experienced surgeon, like our skilled team members, instead of the cheapest cost. To help make your surgery easy to afford, Forma Plastic Surgery accepts many payment methods, and our office can help you find low-interest medical financing.

Will my insurance cover functional nose surgery?

While rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons is not paid for by insurance, if your nose reshaping surgery is considered medically necessary to improve your breathing, some of your costs may be covered. If you may be applying for reimbursement from your insurance, please tell us in your consultation. We can help you submit the needed information and paperwork to your insurance to properly process your claim.

Are there nonsurgical options to change my nose?

If you want to smooth the appearance of lumps and bumps on your nose, a hyaluronic acid-based wrinkle filler (like Restylane® or JUVÉDERM®) may be an option. An injectable filler can temporarily improve minor imperfections on your nose, which might help you decide to proceed with rhinoplasty. Nose surgery is better for larger changes, long-lasting results, and to adjust the internal structure of the nose for better function. During your consultation, we will tell you more about nonsurgical nose reshaping, also known as liquid rhinoplasty.
