What is Blepharoplasty?

Am I A Candidate For Blepharoplasty?
Upper or lower blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that is sought out by both women and men. During your private consultation, treatment alternatives will be discussed with a member of our team based on your areas of concern that need to be corrected. Generally, ideal candidates suffer from excess, hanging skin and folds on the upper eyelid, or bloated skin just under the bottom eyelid. These conditions can cause functional and vision difficulties that can hinder normal, everyday life. For a more awake facial appearance, eyelid surgery may be the appropriate procedure for you. If you have excess, hanging skin on the upper eyelid, or bulging bags under the eyes, blepharoplasty can treat this to provide you with a younger appearance.
What to Expect from Eyelid Surgery
If you have hanging skin on the upper eyelid or bulging eye bags underneath your lower lids, blepharoplasty treats these issues and provides a rejuvenated appearance. During your consultation, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons can discuss your goals and create a detailed treatment plan based on what you’d like to address. Generally, ideal candidates want to treat excess, saggy skin that rests on the top eyelid or eye bags underneath the bottom lid.
Depending on the type and complexity of your eyelid surgery, procedures may be done on the top eyelid itself, on the bottom portion, or a combination of both eyelids
- Upper
Upper eyelid surgery removes droopy skin over the eye, which creates a more awakened and appealing look. An incision is typically made along the natural crease of the eyelid. The placement of this incision allows for optimal healing and concealment of the scar within the natural structures of the eyelid region. - Lower
Lower eyelid surgery reduces bulging skin underneath the lower lid. In most cases, an incision is made below the lash line to remove excess skin to produce a flatter, smoother look. In addition, sometimes incisions can be may within the lower eyelid to reduce or reposition fat deposits.
Eyelid incisions are closed with sutures and will need to be removed at the office between 5-7 days post-procedure. Swelling and bruising is very common with this type of procedure but gradually resolves within the first 10-14 days after surgery. All patients receive detailed aftercare instructions to help with healing and optimize the surgical result. At Forma Plastic Surgery, we pride ourselves on delivering a natural and rejuvenated appearance.
Blepharoplasty FAQ
How much does blepharoplasty cost?
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, costs can vary based on whether you are getting an upper eyelid lift, lower, or both. When your treatment plan has been created in your initial consultation, a member of our experienced team of surgeons can go over the estimated costs. For results that look natural and last for many years, it is better to concentrate on finding a skilled plastic surgeon whom you are comfortable with, like the surgeons at Forma Plastic Surgery, instead of looking for the lowest cost. To make it easy for you to afford a great eyelid lift, we accept several payment methods, and we can help you find low-interest financing.
Can I use insurance to pay for my eyelid surgery?
When loose skin is affecting your vision, your insurance might pay for part of your blepharoplasty. Please talk to your surgeon in your initial consultation if you are considering using your insurance. A team member at Forma Plastic Surgery will help you get the needed information and paperwork for your provider to consider your claim. Generally, you will need a diagnosis from an ophthalmologist or optometrist that blepharoplasty is medically necessary to improve your vision.
What are some other benefits of an eyelid lift?
Eyelid surgery not only helps to rejuvenate your face; it can also improve other aspects of your life. You may discover your vision field is greater when loose skin from your upper eyelid is removed. It can also be much easier to apply eye shadow and other makeup once your upper eyelid is smooth. Getting rid of fine lines, paper-thin skin, dark circles, and puffy bags under your eyes can help your eyes appear brighter and fuller without cosmetics.
Will an eyelid lift fix wrinkles and Crow's feet?
Forehead wrinkles and Crow's feet might be better treated with a facelift or brow lift because the results of the blepharoplasty are limited to the eyelids only. Blepharoplasty can be combined with a nonsurgical treatment such as BOTOX®, which can smooth wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. An injectable filler can also be effective because it adds volume to hollow areas for a softer, smoother appearance. During your initial consultation, we will develop your unique treatment plan to fit your goals.
What about nonsurgical treatments instead of eye surgery?
Noninvasive skin tightening procedures and injectable wrinkle treatments (such as BOTOX, Restylane®, and JUVÉDERM®) can give you some improvements. However, if you have moderate to severe loose skin or want long-lasting results, eyelid surgery is better for your needs. After you tell your surgeon about your concerns and goals, they will give you their recommendations for your surgical or nonsurgical treatment plan. They may also recommend both nonsurgical and surgical procedures for your best results.
