Facial Fat Grafting

As people age, they tend to lose facial fat, and this can result in looking fatigued and gaunt. For individuals who are interested in facial rejuvenation but are not ideal candidates for Botox® or dermal fillers, facial fat grafting may be a possibility. At Forma Plastic Surgery, we offer facial fat grafting to individuals in the Phoenix and Scottsdale areas. Facial fat grafting, also known as facial fat transfer, uses a person’s own fat to help contour areas of the face, creating a more youthful appearance. It can also be used to plump lips, fill in scars, or other facial imperfections to create a more natural, unblemished-looking skin.

Facial Fat Grafting Consultation

Individuals who are interested in facial fat grafting should consult with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. During this first visit, the plastic surgeon will evaluate the patient to determine if he or she is an appropriate candidate for the procedure. The ideal candidate is a healthy, non-smoking individual who suffers from wrinkles, creases, frown lines or hollowing of the face. The plastic surgeon will explain in detail what this procedure can and cannot correct in order to make sure that the patient has realistic goals and expectations. The plastic surgeon will also explain probable outcomes and any potential risks or complications associated with a facial fat grafting procedure.

Facial Fat Grafting Procedure

There are a few steps to this procedure. The first involves removing surplus fat from one part of the body (the donor site) with a small tool called a cannula. Next, the fat tissue is processed, separating the damaged cells and material from the whole, undamaged cells. Finally the undamaged fat cells are re-injected into the targeted areas of the face using a smaller cannula. Facial fat transfer is usually a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that only takes about an hour to perform.

Facial Fat Grafting Results and Recovery

Patients may experience some mild bruising and swelling. Most of the bruising and swelling should resolve after a few weeks of the procedure, and the majority of patients are able to return to work within a couple of days. Facial fat grafting is often a great option for patients wanting longer lasting results than those of temporary dermal fillers such as Restylane or Perlane. A board-certified plastic surgeon is an excellent resource to help educate and inform you of your individual options and issues.
