Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Over time a woman’s breast will often lose its shape and firmness. This change can be a result of pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuation, aging, and gravity. A breast lift, medically known as a mastopexy, is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin and tightens the surrounding tissue to reshape the breasts to reposition the nipples. A breast lift will not necessarily change the size or the fullness of the breast, so a woman may need either a reduction or an augmentation procedure in addition to the lift. Forma Plastic Surgery offers breast lift procedures in the Scottsdale and Phoenix areas, using the most advanced surgical techniques.

Breast Lift Consultation

Individuals interested in a breast lift should meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon for an initial consultation. During this visit, the plastic surgeon will evaluate the patient by asking questions about the patient’s medical and surgical history, the medications or supplements she might be taking, and the motivation for seeking surgical intervention. The plastic surgeon will also perform a breast examination, taking detailed measurements to determine the size and shape of the breasts, the skin quality, the level of tissue loss, and the placement of the nipples and areolas. Once a patient is determined to be appropriate, the plastic surgeon will discuss the various surgical options and provide his or her recommendations. He or she will also explain the risks, benefits and complications that can occur with the procedure.

Preparing for your Breast Lift Procedure

Patients should begin preparing for surgery two to four weeks before the procedure is scheduled. The plastic surgeon will require that patients avoid all nicotine sources and avoid taking aspirin or other blood thinning medication. The plastic surgeon will also send the patient for pre-operative labs and testing to make sure that she is appropriate for surgery. Medications are prescribed to take both before and after the procedure.

The day before surgery, it is important that patients thoroughly bathe and get plenty of rest. The day of the procedure, patients should wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. Patients should also arrange to be accompanied by a friend or family member who can drive them home after surgery. It is also important for patients to carefully follow any pre-operative instructions given to them by the plastic surgeon to ensure for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery.

The Breast Lift Procedure

A breast lift can be performed using a variety of incision patterns and techniques. The three most common incision patterns are: around the areola; around the areola and vertically down from the areola to the inframammary fold (breast crease); and around the areola, vertically down to the inframammary fold and horizontally along the inframammary fold.

Once the incision is made, the underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve the shape and firmness. Next, the nipple-areolar complex is repositioned to a more natural looking position, and if necessary, the areolas made be reduced in size. The plastic surgeon then will excise any excess breast skin. The remaining skin is tightened, and the incisions are then closed.

Breast Lift Recovery and Results

After the procedure, patients will have dressings applied to their incisions, and they will need to wear a compression garment for several weeks; this garment helps to reduce swelling and support the breasts as they heal. It is very important to follow all of the post-operative instructions given by your plastic surgeon to ensure the smoothest recovery possible.

The results of a breast lift procedure are immediately visible, but the recovery time period for the surgery usually lasts several weeks. Patients should expect some swelling, soreness and numbness in the nipples for the first few weeks after the surgery. Medications prescribe help alleviate these issues substantially. As recovery progresses, patients will be advised on when to start resuming their normal activities. This will be decided on a case-by-case basis as every patient recovers slightly differently. Satisfaction with breast lifts is excellent. Patients can expect long lasting results.
